Renfrew Ladies teach Saints harsh derby lesson

- BEN RAMAGE

ST MIRREN WOMEN ........................... 2 RENFREW LADIES ............................ 14

Unbeaten Renfrew Ladies showed no mercy on their local rivals after pulling off a 14-2 derby demolition job on St Mirren Women.

SWF Championship title hopefuls Renfrew showed a ruthless streak from the off as just two minutes into the game a cross-cum-shot from Erin Gould found its way into the far corner to open the scoring.

Shortly after it was 2-0 when the New Western Park club’s top goalscorer Sinead MacLeod got off the mark.

Before the first 15 minutes was out it was three, and looking like a rout was on the cards, as striker Karen Baillie opened her account for the day.

Renfrew were cruising and on the 25 minute mark Emma Ward produced the goal of the day when she picked up the ball 25 yards out before curling an outstanding effort into the top corner.

Moments later Ruadh Houston broke free from the St Mirren defence to slot the ball under the Saints goalkeeper to make it five.

Morgan Graham would be next on the score sheet as she opened her account for Renfrew with her first goal for the club.

The seventh came just minutes before half time when Baillie netted her second of the game.

Despite their dominance on the scoreboard and the pitch, Renfrew showed no mercy and picked up the second half exactly how the first ended.

MacLeod bagged her second, before St Mirren picked up a consolation goal to stem the tide.

The respite didn’t last long though, with Frew striker Baillie grabbing her hat-trick and shortly after her fourth of the night to take the visitors into double figures.

Still Renfrew didn’t take their foot off the accelerator.

Michaela Brown netted the most celebrated goal of the day having been out of action injured for three years, marking her return with her first ever competitive goal for the club.

St Mirren added a second after a well-worked goal saw them break in behind the Renfrew defence to slot home.

Substitute striker Karen Penglase got on the score sheet to make it 122, while Graham grabbed her brace shortly after.

And Brown rounded off the perfect game for Renfrew when she calmly finished an excellent move to see the final score end 14-2.

Renfrew boss Aldo Hunter said: “I was absolutely delighted with the derby win.

“I thought the team were outstanding for spells in the game and I think we showed why we’re still unbeaten in the league.

“It was also fantastic to see Michaela Brown getting two goals after being out for so long with a serious ACL injury.

“She was player of the match for me.”
