NHS 24 staff hailed for efforts

-

NHS 24’s call handlers and operators are a critical part of Scotland’s NHS.

And, to recognise their incredible efforts, NHS 24 is marking today as Call Handler and Operator Day.

Tributes to the staff have been pouring in, including from Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Humza Yousaf.

Call handlers and operators provide a vital service to the public and are the first point of contact for those needing help from the 111 service.

Now in its second year, the special day is designed to recognise and celebrate their contribution to Scotland’s health care system.

These staff are supported by a range of clinical colleagues who understand firsthand the role and how important it is in supporting people who call 111.

Steph Phillips, director of service delivery at NHS 24, said:“I am always amazed and very humbled by the service provided by our staff in supporting frontline services to the people of Scotland.

“They are highly trained and dedicated colleagues and I have enormous respect for the job they do, and the care and professionalism they bring while doing it.”

The 111 service provides nonemergency medical advice and currently answers on average 40,000 calls per week, or one call every 17 seconds.

Mr Yousaf said:“NHS 24 continues to provide a highly effective, safe triage system to the people of Scotland, despite the substantial increase in demand placed on the Service by the outbreak of Covid-19.

“My heartfelt thanks and gratitude goes to each and every person working in the Service across the country to provide patients with expert advice and access to healthcare services to meet their needs.

“Your compassion, dedication and skill lead our patient safety and none of it would be possible without you.”
