This nightmare can never happen again

- STEPHEN HOUSTON

A shattered homeowner has demanded immediate action after another car ploughed into her wall within a month.

The motor shot straight into the sandstone wall after colliding with another car at a death-trap junction.

Just 24 hours earlier workmen began rebuilding the wall after the previous smash.

Now Hilda Cameron says: “We need immediate action by Renfrewshire Council before someone is killed.

“We don’t have time for a lengthy design process . . . safety barriers are needed as an emergency.”

Earlier this month we told how a car trying to negotiate the busy Glasgow Road/Hawkhead Road junction sent the wall flying.

Minutes earlier schoolchildren had been waiting to cross at the exact spot.

It happened again on Saturday night just after 11pm after an impact between a Honda Civic and a Seat Ibiza.

The Seat mounted the pavement and hit the remains of the wall.

It has been brought down four times in recent memory.

Care worker Hilda, in her sixties, said: “The repairs only started on Friday and a day later we have this nightmare again.

“No one was injured thank God, but it is only a matter of time.

“A barrier needs to be put in sooner rather than later.”

Local tory councillor Neill Graham said he will ask Renfrewshire Council to “install safety railings before somebody is killed”.

Cllr Graham said: “Luckily there were no pedestrians waiting to cross the road but it is only a matter of time before this junction kills someone.

“This junction is used by many school children walking and being so close to Barshaw Park there are a high number people walking.

“Renfrewshire Council has a duty to keep people safe and railings must be installed without delay.”

He added: “I would also make a plea to Renfrewshire Council to put a filter at the lights.

“With increased traffic due to developments at Hawkhead Road it is a regular occurrence that cars are stranded in the middle of the junction which causes mayhem at rush hour. This should be treated with the highest priority.”

Last month a Ford Kuga ploughed right over the exact spot where people would have been standing to cross.

The impact brought down the stone wall and railings in Hilda’s garden and triggered the car’s air bag.

It was so loud she thought there had been an explosion.”

Renfrewshire Council is looking at how it can make the danger zone safer.

The area’s labour councillor Jim Sharkey said the last time: “This is a problem junction and needs rearranged as soon as possible.

“I can understand the fear of local residents that they are going to wake up with another car, or something larger, embedded in the front garden.”

Renfrewshire Council said it was working on a quick solution.

A spokesman said: “The safety of all road users and pedestrians is paramount and we are liaising with our colleagues in Police Scotland to identify and implement any immediate safety measures required at this location.”
