Renfrewshi­re is amongst the least ‘caring’ areas of Scotland, according to a new survey.

Research by care specialist Guardian Carers used the latest data from the Scottish Environmen­t Protection Agency (SEPA), the ONS, and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) to explore recycling rates, the number of registered charities and the kilotons of CO2 emitted per square Kilometre in Scotland, in order to discover which Scottish region is the most caring of all.

The Western Isles topped the table as Scotland’s kindest area, according to the figures, with the highest number of charities per 100,000 people and some of the lowest carbon emissions in the country.

Renfrewshi­re recycled 49.1 per cent of waste, compared to the Western Isles’ 34.6 per cent.

There are also 517 registered charities in Renfrewshi­re, equating to 595.76 per 100,000 population but carbon dioxide emissions per square kilometre rank at 3,2 in the area, compared with 0.2 in the Western Isles,

With 349 registered charities operating in the island group, giving a figure of 2670.03 per 100,000 population, it received an overall index score of 27.19, to Renfrewshi­re’s 18.68.

The figures place Renfrewshi­re 11th from the bottom in a list of Scotland’s 32 local authoritie­s.

East Renfrewshi­re achieved an overall score of 20.70, placing it above Renfrewshi­re on the scale.

The Scottish Borders, Angus and Moray are also highlighte­d as some of the kindest areas in Scotland, when ranked by the data.

Glasgow and Dundee come bottom of the list, with lower recycling rates, smaller numbers of charities per 100,000 people and the highest carbon emissions in the country.

Glasgow received an overall index rating of 8.96, while Dundee scored 13.06.
