Vandals set fire at Renfrew primary

Police are investigat­ing after vandals set fire to part of a Renfrew primary school on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to Kirklandne­uk Primary in the town’s Ard Road after 10.30pm following reports of a fire in the building’s new extension.

Police and firefighte­rs raced to the scene where a “small fire” was discovered in the extension, which is currently under constructi­on.

Two fire appliances attended the scene to put out the flames and ensured the area was safe.

Renfrewshi­re Council confirmed that no damage had been done to the main school building and that staff and pupils had not been affected.

Police Scotland is currently investigat­ing the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the fire and enquiries are ongoing.

Officers in Renfrew are set to increase patrols in the area and are speaking with nearby residents in order to trace those responsibl­e for starting the blaze.

A Renfrewshi­re Council spokesman said: “There was a small fire which caused minimal damage to the new extension which is currently under constructi­on. Our Property and Health and Safety teams have carried out inspection­s and our contractor is carrying out the necessary remedial work.

“The main building remains open for staff and pupils as normal and learning is not affected.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoma­n added: “We were alerted at 10.38pm on Monday, March 28 to reports of a building on fire at Craigielea Road, Renfrew.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and firefighte­rs extinguish­ed a small fire affecting a single storey building under constructi­on.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
