Dramatic late Faddy goal denies St Mirren

-

Ahead of St Mirren’s trip to Fir Park this weekend, in today’s Flashback we’ve revisited another Saints jaunt to North Lanarkshire back in April 2013.

James McFadden’s expertly executed free-kick denied Saints all three points at Fir Park.

Former Saints striker Michael Higdon nodded the Steelmen into the lead after 34 minutes but Conor Newton levelled matters four minutes before half-time.

Saints substitute Lewis Guy made it 2-1, but McFadden ensured a point apiece with his set-piece six minutes from the end.

The first piece of action saw Kenny McLean pick up a Steve Thompson pass inside the penalty box.

Goalkeeper Darren Randolph was out quickly to make a brave block to deny the striker.

Moments later, Motherwell’s Shaun Hutchinson nodded a corner to the back post narrowly wide.

Then McFadden squandered a good chance when he just failed to connect with Chris Humphrey’s driven pass into the danger zone with the Saints defence all at sea.

Back came the home side and Henrik Ojamaa picked up a return pass inside the penalty box but his effort on goal lacked the power or direction to trouble Craig Samson.

Sander Puri swung in a corner from the left after 16 minutes but Marc McAusland’s left-footed effort from 10 yards was saved well by Randolph.

After 25 minutes, Higdon volleyed over from 10 yards as the big Scouser connected with McFadden’s cross.

Dougie Imrie prodded a shot in the box off the shin of Randolph after he picked up a deflected cross, before Tom Hateley lashed a rightfoot shot from distance high and wide.

Motherwell took the lead after the half hour mark when skipper Keith Lasley swung an inviting cross to the back post where Higdon rose beyond the defence to head powerfully into the net.

But, seven minutes later, Saints levelled as Estonian internationalist Puri picked out Newton on his own and the Geordie midfielder sent a shot from the edge of the box beyond the reach of Randolph.

Guy replaced Puri at the start of the second 45 and the change resulted in goalscorer Newton moving to the right side of midfield.

Ojamaa stung the fingers of Samson at his near post after 48 minutes with a fiercely-struck shot from Higdon’s lay-off.

And McLean sent a right-foot shot over the Motherwell crossbar from 30 yards after he picked up Guy’s pass.

Striker Thompson played in McLean as the striker picked up McGowan’s angled cross, but the young midfielder was denied a shot at goal with some last-ditch defending.

At the other end, Lasley took a Humphrey cut-back and unleashed a shot that took a deflection and flew over.

John McGinn replaced Imrie after 63 minutes, before McFadden got the better of Jim Goodwin and Newton to fire in a shot from 25 yards that drifted wide.

Lasley saw another effort at the edge of the box deflect on to the roof of the net as Motherwell sought to regain the lead.

Saints took the lead after 74 minutes when Guy was on hand to bury Parkin’s pass under the body of Randolph and into the net.

With just six minutes remaining, Motherwell equalised when Higdon won a free-kick after McAusland was deemed guilty of climbing over the back of him.

Up stepped McFadden from 25 yards to curl it right into the postage stamp corner.

He almost repeated the feat minutes but Samson held that attempt to secure a point for the Saints.
