A Paisley service that cares for people with alcohol-related brain damage has triumphed at an awards ceremony.

The Caledonian Korsakoff Unit was crowned Specialist Service/Unit of the Year at the Scottish Care National Care Home Awards.

Staff took to the stage at the Hilton Hotel, in Glasgow, to pick up their gong.

The unit, which is located at HC-One’s Hillside View Care Home in Glenburn, specialises in supporting people with Korsakoff’s Syndrome, or alcoholrelated brain damage.

All of those getting treatment are under the age of 65.

The awards evening was hosted by Scottish Care’s chief executive Dr Donald Macaskill, plus Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus.

The Paisley unit was nominated by former manager Katy Jenks – who has since been promoted to an area director role at HC-One.

The unit was selected as the winner, having demonstrated that it provides the specific skills needed to manage and deliver services sensitive to the needs of older people with dementia, alongside other specialist conditions and client groups.

Unit manager Joanne Campbell said: “It is a great achievement and so good to see the team recognised for all their hard work and person-centred approach, especially during the current pandemic.

“Our colleagues have worked tirelessly to ensure we deliver the best care possible for the residents.”

Jackie McDonald, interim managing director for Scotland at HC-One, added: “I am extremely proud that the Korsakoff Unit at Hillside View has won the Specialist Service/Unit of the Year Award.

“They are a fabulous team, and they really deserve this recognition.

James Tugendhat, HCOne’s chief executive officer, praised the Hillside View team.

He said: “This is a tremendous achievement and the team have truly gone above and beyond to provide the kindest care to residents living in the Korsakoff.”
