Striker Greive hails Buddies’togetherness
Alex Greive firmly believes St Mirren’s band of brothers will pull together and lead the club to Premiership survival.
That’s because he feels how strong the camaraderie within the group is every time he enters the Saints dressing room.
The Buddies are undoubtedly facing an uphill battle to make the top six this season, with their last shot now sealing a win against Rangers this Sunday while hoping several other results elsewhere go their way the day before.
While Greive (inset) admits St Mirren also have to be wary of the danger lurking over their shoulder with St Johnstone hot on their heels, he insists his Buddies will turn the corner once Stephen
Robinson’s stuttering side finally click into action.
Speaking exclusively to Express Sport, Greive said: “It was a really disappointing result against Motherwell.
“We knew what a win could have done for us. It would have put us right into the top six.
“The dressing room was full of disappointment afterwards, naturally, but we’ve just got to dust ourselves down and go again.
“The table doesn’t lie. We know we’re only six points clear of St Johnstone now and they’re hot on our heels.
“But we’ve got to stay positive. There’s no point going into games thinking we’re going to lose.
“Our mindset has to be that we can get something out of the
Rangers game, either a point or all three.
“Robinson has been good with us so far. He’s definitely picked up the intensity and there’s more focus on the finer details.
“It hasn’t quite clicked as of yet, but we’re really not far off it at all. We’re so close to making it happen.
“Players leaving a team happens in football at the end of every season, wherever you are.
“But everyone in that dressing room are good mates. We get on so well and we owe it to each other to keeping fighting for each other.”
Greive was a second half substitute in St Mirren’s 4-2 defeat at Fir Park having only just returned from international duty with New Zealand.
The 22-year-old insists he’s coping fine with the jet lag and is ready to perform for the Saints as they hunt precious points over their remaining six Premiership games.
He also revealed he’s a fan of the Scottish Premiership split, as he feels it gives every game an edge towards the business end of the season.
Greive said: “It was a quick turnaround, but I felt OK. Your body just gets used to the time differences and the jet lag eventually.
“I’m totally fit
now and I’m looking forward to playing my part and doing everything I can to give us a successful end to the season.
“We could still get into the top six. Stranger things have happened in football and we only need a few other results to go our way.
“The split thing is a bit of a novelty to be fair. It’s not too dissimilar in New Zealand though.
“We play in the regionals and if you make the top four you then go into the national league.
“It definitely makes the league here more exciting. Sometimes if you’re clear of relegation but in midtable, you play some meaningless games and dead rubbers.
“But the split here makes every game mean something. I’m enjoying it so far.”
