BRUTAL RUN KILLED US BUT WE CAN END UP SEVENTH

Jones: We ’ll get it together for last five games

- BEN RAMAGE

Jordan Jones pulled no punches when he described St Mirren’s recent run of results as “brutal”.

The Saints winger, on loan from Wigan Athletic, was honest in his reflection after Stephen Robinson’s stuttering side suffered their seventh loss in their last eight games against Rangers on Sunday.

But the 27-year-old feels he and his teammates can’t sit around in self-pity for the next two weeks.

That’s because he firmly believes they’ve got enough quality in their ranks to go and clinch seventh spot in the Premiership table, just like they did last season under ex-boss Jim Goodwin.

Jones told Express Sport: “When I came in the aim was to get the club into the top six.

“We’ve had a brutal run of results, to be perfectly honest.

“But we can’t sit and dwell on it. We have to come together and make sure we finish as high as possible. ,We have to defend better as a team. It’s not just the defenders, it’s everyone on the pitch. That’s the main thing we have to fix. If we do that, we’re going to get chances and we’ll get the right results.

“We all know the results we’ve had of late haven’t been good enough. It’s something we have to put right.

“Having said that, we’re only two points off seventh so that’s our aim now. Of course, coming into a game against Rangers you’re hoping to get something from it. But it’s not going to define our season that’s for sure.

“If we can get momentum we can go on run. But you have to get the first three points on the board. Every team in that bottom half is going to be looking over their shoulder.

“But we’ve got enough quality in the team to go and get some good results in our last five games and get that seventh place.”

Jones feels the timing of Rangers’ first two goals had a huge impact during their painful 4-0 home defeat at the hands of his former club.

The flying winger is looking to take the lessons he learned from his previous bottom six battle with Kilmarnock as the Buddies look to ensure they comfortably stay in the top flight. Jones said: “The first half couldn’t have started much worse with that early goal.

“I thought we had alright control of the game after that and had a couple of chances.

“The goal at the end of the first half killed us. It was the perfect time for them and the worst for us.

“It was obviously an uphill battle after that,

“My first year with Kilmarnock we finished eighth, so I know what it’s all about. You need to get a good run of results at the right time and we’ve got this break now. Hopefully we can do that.

“It’s certainly not a lack of work on the training pitch that’s hurting us. He (Robinson) is putting his ideas across and we’re trying to get on board with what he wants us to do.

“We’ll dust ourselves down and get up for the last five games.”
