Paisley pub workers and regulars hit the heights for charities

- TRACY-ANN CARMICHAEL

Staff and customers from a popular Paisley bar have gone the extra mile to raise charity cash.

Regulars at the Wellington Bar pulled on their walking boots and scaled the peak of Conic Hill, on the banks of Loch Lomond.

They were joined by bar staff from the hostelry - in the town’s Causeyside Street - in completing the walk recently.

It came as they made efforts to raise money to be split between charities Alzheimer Scotland and Macmillan Cancer Support.

They also pulled together to make a charity event held at the pub last Saturday a roaring success.

Manager Grace Andres, told the Express: “The Wellington is quite a wee community pub, we have a lot of regulars and the staff and customers know one another.

“We were talking about maybe pulling together to do something for a worthwhile cause and we were thinking of something to get a wee bit of community spirit going rather than just putting out buckets or whatever.”

They hit on the idea of scaling Balmaha’s popular peak for sponsorship cash to boost the charities.

A ten-strong team of staff and customers tackled Conic before they attended the successful charity night held the following week.

The pub hosted a DJ, laid on a buffet and raffled prizes donated by a string of generous local businesses to raise funds.

Added Grace: “The walk saw volunteers from both sides of the bar pull together, it was people of mixed age ranges and mixed abilities and everyone rallied round for one another.

“Luckily the weather was dry and we were picked up from the pub by bus and returned there afterwards.

“The charity night itself was well attended, the regulars and staff turned out and the staff put in a great shift. It was a good night.”

Cash raised will be divided between the charities, which were selected because they are close to the hearts of both staff and customers, said Grace: “The charities were selected by both the staff and customers.

“We have had customers who have suffered from the illnesses or have had family members who have and so have the staff so they are significant to people within the pub.”
