Man found with blade in jacket after he took an overdose is jailed
Cops recovered knife from collapsed patient’s clothes
A man who was found suffering a drug overdose in Barrhead while in possession of a knife has been jailed.
Gregor Terry, 42, was spotted lying in a car park by concerned witnesses who called an ambulance as it was suspected he had suffered an overdose.
Ambulance staff called cops due to Terry’s condition and they found a blade in his jacket pocket.
Terry, described as a prisoner of Low Moss in Bishopbriggs, appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court from custody yesterday and admitted he was in possession of a lockback knife on December 12 last year in Duncolm View.
The court heard: “Around 9.20am on Sunday, December 12, 2021, staff of the Scottish Ambulance service were instructed to attend in relation to an unresponsive male lying on the ground believed to be a potential drug overdose.
“Upon arrival they found the accused to be lying on the ground near to a red car with the driver side door open and the keys beside the accused.
“Paramedics began to carry out medical checks on the accused due to him being unresponsive.
“The clothing worn by the accused had to be cut to carry out further medical checks, these items of clothing – once removed – were placed inside the open vehicle.
“At 10.05am police were instructed to attend in relation to the accused having overdosed.
“On arrival, police were told of the circumstances by ambulance staff who handed over the vehicle keys that were found beside the accused.
“Police carried out police system checks to confirm the identity of the accused and that the vehicle belonged to him.
“Terry was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital to be assessed by medical staff.
“Due to concerns of what the accused may have taken, and to ensure his safety, police carried out a search of the accused’s jacket and a black handled lockback knife was recovered from the pocket of the accused.
“Mr Terry was not formally cautioned and charged due to his state of consciousness at the time.
“He was cautioned and charged later at hospital and made no reply.”
Defence agent Kirsty McGeehan told the court Terry had overdosed on prescription medication.
Ms McGeehan said: “Following this incident Terry was taken to hospital and he spent nine days in the high dependency unit.
“The knife was for self-harm.” Sheriff Gillian Craig jailed Terry for 15 months reduced to ten months due to the timing of his plea and backdated this to December 21.
Police carried out a search of his jacket and a black handled lockback knife was recovered
