Cops smelled cannabis when student opened car door

A student has been banned from the roads after being caught driving his mum’s Audi while high on drugs.

Omar Yasin, 20, had been using cannabis on February 26, last year when police stopped him for speeding in the Audi A3 on Renfrew’s Kings Inch Road.

Police also noticed the front two tyres didn’t meet legal requirements.

Procurator fiscal depute David Gallagher told Paisley Sheriff

Court that police spotted business management student Yasin when he was undertaking traffic and speeding.

Mr Gallagher explained: “The accused was observed by police to be driving in excess of the 30mph speed limit.

“He was seen undertaking vehicles in lane two and he was passing them very quickly.

“The other vehicles were complying with the speed limit.

“Police stopped the accused’s vehicle and on speaking with the accused they could smell cannabis coming from within the Audi A3.

“The accused was subject to the roadside drugs test with his saliva drug wipe returning a positive specimen for cannabis.

“In the meantime, officers examined the vehicle where it was noted the two front tyres were under the legal 1.6mm of tread.

“Yasin was then taken to Govan police station, where the relevant procedures were carried out and a sample of blood was taken.

“The results showed the accused had 6.5mg of cannabis in his blood.

“He was cautioned and charged and made no reply to all charges.”

Defence agent Jim Clarke told the court the Audi A3 was Yasin’s mother’s car.

Mr Clarke explained: “He is ashamed of his conduct and he has been frank with his family about what had been going on at the time.

“He now realises it was an episode of immaturity.

“He is hoping to enter third year at Glasgow Caledonian University this academic year.

“He has some savings and he supports himself by working parttime at Morrisons and would be in a position to pay a fine.”

On sentencing, Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill said: “You’re 20 years old, you have no previous convictions and you pled guilty at the first opportunity, so I’m going to take all of this into consideration.”

Sheriff Gill imposed a total fine of £700 and ordered it to be paid at £10 per week.

In addition, Yasim, of Kilmarnock Road in Glasgow, was banned from driving for 12 months, with Sheriff Gill stating: “Let’s hope you’ve learned your lesson and I hope never to see you in court again.”
