Deaths with covid fall as rate of cases nears 1,000 in a week
Covid-related deaths in Renfrewshire have dropped from the high reached two weeks ago.
Figures show that four people passed away in Renfrewshire last week with the virus was mentioned on the death certificate.
It marks an increase from the two deaths recorded the previous week, but is down from the high of 11 logged in the week beginning March 28.
Data from the National Records of Scotland two weeks ago showed that virusrelated deaths in Scotland rose by 33 on the previous week’s figure.
The majority of deaths where the virus has been recorded as a contributory factor are still among the 75 and over age group.
National monthly analysis from the government agency reveals that the age-standardised rate of covid-related deaths was higher in March 2022 at 145 per 100,000, compared to February 2022 as 83 per 100,000 .
Throughout the pandemic, the highest rate of covidrelated deaths was 585 per 100,000 people in April 2020.
Of the 14,106 deaths involving Covid-19 between March 2020 and March 2022, 93 per cent – some 13,113 – had at least one pre-existing condition, with the most common being dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Pete Whitehouse, director of statistical services, said: “The latest figures show that last week there were 139 deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
“This is 33 fewer deaths than the previous week.
“The number of deaths from all causes registered in Scotland in this week was 1,222, which is 120, or 11 per cent, more than the five-year average.”
There have been nine deaths in Scotland in which the underlying cause of death was due to the adverse effects of vaccination against Covid-19, and two further deaths where an adverse effect was mentioned on the death certificate. The figure marks no increase from last month.
Data from Public Health Scotland indicates that by March 31, 4.4 million people had received at least one vaccine dose.
The seven-day case positivity rate for Renfrewshire stood at 968 on April 17 - a seven day positive rate of 539.6 per 100,000 population.
