A troubled lout who had been out drinking with his girlfriend in Paisley ended up attacking her in front of cops.

Christopher Carnihan, 44, grabbed Stacey Buchanan by the head with both hands and violently shook her, calling her a ‘f ***** g idiot’, as police pleaded with him to stop.

Procurator Amber Feeney told Paisley Sheriff Court this week that Carnihan and his partner had been out drinking in Paisley at various pubs on September 20, 2019.

Ms Feeney explained: “Around 2am on Saturday, September 21, both made their way to Causeyside Street from New Street when a witness saw the accused swearing at the complainer.

“The complainer was walking away, but he was following close behind swearing and he stated, ‘You don’t know how lucky you are.’

“Police were on mobile patrol when they drove past and heard the accused shouting.

“They lowered the driver’s window and observed the accused walking behind the complainer and swearing at her.

“Police then observed Carnihan grab the complainer’s head with two hands and began violently shaking it, stating ‘f ***** g idiot.’

“Officers shouted at the accused to identify himself and stop.

“The accused turned towards the vehicle and shouted, ‘Who the f**k do you think your talking to?’ and ‘What are you going to do, you couple of dafties.’

“He was then arrested, cautioned and charged and made no reply.”

Carnihan admitted assaulting his partner and shouting and swearing at her on September 21, 2019.

Defence agent David Nicholson told the court Carnihan and Ms Buchanan have an 18-month-old child together.

Mr Nicholson told: “He is a firsttime offender with no previous convictions.

“In his employment he has saved people’s lives, but suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“Alcohol played a part in the events on this night.

“He regrets and recognises the impact of this behaviour. This was an out-of-character incident.

“He and his partner have had a child together since the incident and the relationship continues.”

On sentencing, Sheriff Brian Mohan said: “In one view, your behaviour on that day was entirely of your character.

“You are someone who has it confirmed that suffers from stress as a result of your experiences resulting in irritability and short temper.

“Your shortness of temper has resulted in you over-reacting.”

Sheriff Mohan ordered Carnihan, of Dumbreck Court in Glasgow, to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work and made him subject to supervision of the social work department for 12 months.
