Community garden gets growing at its official opening

-

Residents officially opened a new community garden at the heart of their housing scheme.

Margaret Stewart and Sadie Rossi were given the honour of officially opening the Charleston Community Garden in Paisley and starting the fun open afternoon.

There was also visits from Roar - Connections for Life, the Foot Train charity and a fun outdoor Zumba class to get everyone moving. Children planted sunflower seeds in their own pots and have been asked to bring them back to the garden once they’ve sprouted.

Dot Finlay, chair of Charleston Tenants and Residents Association said it was a fun afternoon.

She added:“I need to thank the community champions Sharon at Morrisons Anchor Mill, Claire at Morrisons Neilston Road, Claire at Asda Linwood and Claire at Tesco East Lane for their contributions.

“It’s great to have the garden officially opened for everyone to enjoy.”

The association received a £10,000 grant from Renfrewshire Council’s green spaces, parks and play area fund to create the garden last year.

Work began in September 2021 and there are now six large growing beds which are fully accessible. The residents are growing things like blackberries, rhubarb, herbs and various vegetables.

There are three benches and a picnic bench for people to gather and enjoy the space.

Now Dot hopes she can get in touch with a mural artist to help paint the grey fence surrounding the garden.

She said:“We have tried, unsuccessfully, to find someone to create a mural incorporating the Charleston Drum on the fencing but having no joy.

“We would love to hear from someone with experience of this to get in touch with us.”

Anyone who can help create a mural can email Dot at charleston.ta@outlook.com
