Stephen Robinson is glad the Buddies have so many ex-Motherwell players in their squad heading back to familiar ground at Fir Park tonight.

That’s because the St Mirren boss hopes the home crowd will target them and not himself when they all return to face their former club.

The Saints have a core group of exSteelmen in their squad, with Trevor Carson, Charles Dunne, Declan Gallagher, Mark O’Hara, Curtis Main and Tony Watt all in line to feature in North Lanarkshir­e this evening.

Robinson hoping he can sneak under the radar this time around on his return to take on his former employer.

The Saints manager feels there’s another bonus, too. Having watched his former Dons stars Main and Gallagher play out of their skins against Aberdeen at Pittodrie already this season, Robinson is hoping for a similar response tonight as they all look to prove a point against their old team.

Robinson said: “It takes the pressure off me going back there, I won’t get booed for a change!

“They can boo Curtis and Tony, and throw Deccy and Dunney in that as well.

“There’s always a wee added incentive for players going back to their former club, and for myself. You want to be on the winning side.

“The boys against Aberdeen showed what it meant to them, going back there having played for them.

“Hopefully we can get the same response again.”

Two former Motherwell players Robinson is hoping can strike up a lethal combinatio­n for St Mirren are forwards Curtis Main and Tony Watt.

With Alex Greive out of action for at least four weeks, the Saints boss is relieved Watt was brought in to avoid an injury crisis heading into the business end of the season.
