Sponsors pitching in as golf juniors aim for national success

- BEN RAMAGE

Fereneze Golf Club’s talented youngsters are ready to shine on the screen at the Junior Team Golf Home Nations InterClub Championship.

Originally scheduled to take place in Portugal, the competition will now take place across several championship courses in Cheshire, England.

Both Fereneze and Murcar will represent Scotland in the British finals, held in April.

And the exciting event will be televised on Sky Sports, giving the teenagers an even bigger opportunity to impress a global audience.

The Barrhead club have been running a sponsorship drive to help generate funding to support the boys and girls of the team ahead of the massive tournament.

A club spokesperson said: “We’d like to again thank our members, local businesses and Barrhead residents for their kind sponsorship of the team so far.

“Local band Kardo played a gig at the club in January to a sell-out crowd, with everyone there enjoying a fantastic night. Kardo will be back again in October.

“The next fundraising event will be a ladies’ night at the club on Friday March 3, with tickets still available and more details available on Facebook.

“This will be followed by a quiz on Friday March 18. All are welcome on the night and hopefully our sponsors Tennent’s will be providing some special Guinness deals to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

“We’d also like to thank the team sponsor Howden Joinery for their support over the last few years.”

The Fereneze junior team is made up of boys and girls from the age of 12 up to 18.

The club is keen to promote the game of golf to Renfrewshire youngsters, with heavily subsidised annual fees of only £50.

Several of the existing team members will move up to the senior section in 2023 and the club are keen to get new players to keep their impressive run on the greens going.

The club spokesperson added: “Any interested golfers can contact the club at ferenezegc@lineone.net or pop up to the clubhouse or pro shop.

“The club have also introduced specially discounted adult fees for the 2023 season and have no waiting list or joining fee.

“All adult members are entitled to free membership for their children or grandchildren. Please contact the secretary at Ferenezegc@lineone.net or find them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for more details.”
