Clan on target for play-offs with dominant victory

-

Clan gave their play-off hopes a massive boost as they dominated Fife Flyers in a 5-1 victory in Kirkcaldy.

It was a badly-needed win for the Braehead Arena outfit with the regular season finishing line coming into view.

After the heartache of a narrow 5-4 away loss in Guildford on Saturday night, this was the perfect pick-me-up the following evening.

Clan got things going early as Gary Haden sent a rebound from John Dunbar’s assist into the net just seven minutes into the game.

Mitch Jones doubled the lead just a minute later with a trademark ripper from the blue line before stylishly celebrating with the away support.

Then Colton Waltz made it a three-goal lead to the Clan before the end of the first period with a snipe all the way from the blue line to inflict further misery on his former team.

Ty Taylor started off the second period well for Glasgow in goal as he made a strong save from a quick close-range shot.

Jones then bagged his second of the night with a backdoor finish on the powerplay to put the visitors ahead by four before the half-way point.

The Clan’s D-man nearly made it a hat-trick later in the period when he burst out of the box before breaking one-on-one with Shane Owen, but couldn’t beat the Fife netminder.

In the third period, Brad Kennedy grabbed a fifth when he sent home a rebound after a dramatic scramble in the crease.

Flyers managed pull one back half-way through the third period with a Reece Harsch backdoor goal to deny a shutout for Taylor.

Later in the period, Dyson Stevenson dropped the gloves with Janne Kivilahti at the boards before Harsch jumped in as a third man and was ejected from the game, a moment which delighted the already cheerful away support.

However, the night belonged to the Clan, who opened up a three-point gap to ensure their play-off fate rests squarely in their hands going into their final two games of what has been an eventful campaign.
