There was meant to be no such thing as Windows 11. Microsoft once proclaimed that Windows 10 would be the last desktop operating system it ever released, which would be updated into eternity. The big question, then, is this: is Windows 11 really anything more than a new theme pack for Windows 10?

Over the next seven pages we’re going to explore all the major new features and design changes in Windows 11 so you can decide for yourself. We’ll walk you through the new desktop, the fresh delights buried in the settings menus and the features that are yet to come.

We’ll also give you a guide to how you can test Windows 11 for yourself and what your PC will need to install the new operating system – there are some unusual requirements that might leave some Windows 10 PC owners unable to accept the free upgrade.

If you’re having trouble deciding whether Windows 11 is a good thing or not, Jon Honeyball is here to deliver his initial verdict on next-generation Windows. As ever, he doesn’t pull punches.

Finally, a note of caution. The features tested and described here are based on Microsoft’s official briefing, the leaked beta code and our inside contacts. This magazine went to press before we could download the first official beta, and it’s possible that some of the features might change as the operating system nears its autumn release.
