Should I treat the external timber window lintels in my brick cottage?

-

Lintels of this type are often oak or elm. This does not normally need to be treated or ‘fed’ and, in my view, looks best when you can see its weathered colour and texture. It is important to ensure that the timber does not become saturated for prolonged periods, which is when rot sets in. Make sure that any sources of excessive moisture, such as leaking gutters, are dealt with and that rainwater drains off the lintels efficiently.
