Delight at retail fix-up
Shop units are refurbished
Councillors praised “a job well done” at the Dunkeld Road shops during this week’s meeting of the housing and health commitee.
The work to refurbish and upgrade eight existing retail units at 99-119 Dunkeld Road, as well as eight flats directly above the shops, came in under budget and with no disturbance to trade.
The refurbishment - called an “important improvement project for the local community of Muirton” - saw a variety of measures upgraded, including improved fire precautions, electric and gas safety and hygiene facilities.
The appearance of the building was attended to, with new floors, ceilings, doors and windows installed.
A report submitted to the committee stated that “considerable interest” had been shown in the two currently vacant units.
The cost of work was estimated at £860,000, but was done for £802,000.
Councillor John Kellas said that what’s pleasing as former resident - is that there’s still a glimpse of what it used to look like.”
Councillor Heather Stewart, who offered frequent and audible murmurs of agreement during the meeting, added: “I’m delighted to see this here, under budget, on time.
“What else can I say? To see them thriving is phenomenal.”
Councillor Peter Barrett said: “The refurbishment was long overdue.
“I wouldn’t like to get carried away - I’d hope some of the £58,000 could be employed to tidy up the demolition area.”
Councillor Dave Doogan, chairing the committee, said an effort would be made to clean up the surrounding area, but reminded the committee that the development of housing was to begin shortly at the demolition site.
That development is part of phases six and seven of the Muirton Regeneration Project, with 200 new build houses to be completed by 2019.
