Being a Brownie is good for mental health
Research describing how joining the Scouts or Guides in childhood helps lower the risk of mental illness in later life has prompted a Perthshire group to attempt to spread the word.
A recent study, published in the Guardian, indicated that children who participate in Scouts and Guides – which aim to develop qualities such as selfreliance, resolve and a desire for self-learning – are likely to go on to have better mental health in middle age.
“This is great news,” said Brownie Guide unit leader Morven Doig.
“Our Brownie Guide Unit - the 2nd Carse of Gowrie - has grown to a 27-strong group in the space of 12 months and now has a waiting list of eager youngsters keen to join in the activities and learning opportunities we offer.”
Over the last year unit leader Morven and unit helper Katrina Candy have led the girls through Gardening, dance, artists, cooks, crime prevention, camper, world traveller and other badges.
Each one allows the girls to research, develop, learn and enjoy new and interesting subjects. Brownies and Young Leaders from the 2nd Carse of Gowrie Unit
On Saturday, November 26 , the 2nd Carse of Gowrie Brownies will be hosting their own Christmas Fayre to help boost funds to continue activities, buy badges and pay for the annual Guiding census.

“The Fayre is our main fundraiser
this year and we welcome everyone to join us for some festive cheer,” said Katrina.
“We have some superb stalls selling arts and crafts, beauty products, Christmas wreaths, books, cards and 3-D printing and fun stalls like guess the weight of the cake alongside traditional attractions like cake and candy and raffle.
“Being a Brownie instils a sense of community, creativity, teamwork and thoughtfulness and we are incredibly lucky to have such a
great group of girls and the support of their parents.
“We hope people in the Carse of Gowrie and beyond will come along and support the girls on Saturday.”
The Brownies’ Christmas Fayre is being held on Saturday from 1-4pm in the West Carse Hall, Glencarse and Santa will be welcoming youngsters from 2-3pm.
