Raid at bank Police hunt robber who stole cash

- Iain Howie

Police yesterday said they are still hunting a robber who fled with cash from the Bank of Scotland in Dunkeld on Tuesday.

And they have renewed their appeal for workers to come forward with potentially significant footage which could help close the net on the perpetrator.

The incident happened around 11.30am leaving staff at the branch distressed but uninjured.

It is understood that the man was unarmed and police are working to establish the sum of money which was handed over.

Officers have issued an appeal for assistance to trace the man who so far is believed to have acted alone.

They want anyone who may have passed through the area during a three-hour window to get in touch as they could hold vital evidence, including video footage from vehicle dash cams.

Detective Inspector Tom Leonard said: “We want to speak to anyone who was in Dunkeld between 9am and noon this morning (Tuesday), who may have information to assist with our enquiries into the robbery. A man, aged in his 20s or 30s, entered the bank, demanded cash and left with a sum of money.

“The man is described as being white, about five feet nine inches tall and of stocky build. At the time, he was wearing a dark hooded top with a red motif on the chest and blue jeans. He was last seen in the area of St Ninians Gardens.

“I would like to reassure the public that crimes of this nature are thankfully rare and we will have increased patrols in the area as enquiries into the incident continue.

“Whilst we are appealing for residents, visitors and local business to assist us with information, we are also aware that there were a number of courier companies and delivery vans in Dunkeld at the time. I would ask you to report any information to us.

“Did you see a man matching this description in the area? We are particularly interested to speak to any drivers with dashboard cameras who may have been travelling in Dunkeld this morning and we would also like to speak to any residents or local businesses with CCTV cameras.”

Staff at the branch raised the alarm which saw a significant police response dash to the scene.

Witnesses in and around Dunkeld described seeing marked police and unmarked vehicles racing along the A9 to Dunkeld.

One man who was in the Luncarty area described officers speeding past: “They seemed fairly desperate to get there as quickly as possible, veering around cars and lorries on the A9 north. It was pretty dramatic to see so many police cars - about six or seven - belting along, so it was clear that it was serious.”

Witnesses nearby the incident told the Perthshire Advertiser of the drama as it unfolded.

One visitor, who asked not to be identified, said: “It was like every other day but then it turned into something from a TV show or film when police turned up en masse, blocking the road.

“I was about to go to the bank to withdraw some money from the machine but my wife and I were turned away. It was very dramatic.”

Anyone with information that could assist with police enquiries is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or speak to any officer. Information can also be passed anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
