Bakers hope judges say aye to their pies
Linda Hill ofMurrays Bakers in Perth scooped theaward in 2015 A baker’s half-dozen of firms from around Perthshire and Tayside have been shortlisted in the World Champion Scotch Pie Awards for 2016.
Macdonald Brothers of Pitlochry, Murrays Bakers and Tower Bakery, both of Perth, James Pirie and Son of Blairgowrie, Sugar and Spice of Auchterarder and Mr C’s Handcrafted Pies of Newburgh are hoping to make a big impact on this year’s competition.
Murrays of Perth was a previous winner in 2015.
Judges met in Dunfermline this week to assess the entries based on key elements such as appearance, quality, consistency and taste before announcing the finalists of the 18th competition.
“One hundred butchers and bakers entered 500 of their best products into 11 categories this year and the competition has been fierce,” said Alan Clarke, Chief Executive of Scottish Bakers which manages the competition.
“The World Championship Scotch Pie Awards is the only competition of its kind recognising excellence in the preparation of a perfect pie,” continued Alan.
This year’s bumper crop of entries included a wide range of‘products at their peak’with accolades on offer for ranges including Scotch pie, football pies and savouries, macaroni pie, steak pie, sausage roll, vegetarian savouries and apple pies.
The winner will be announced in January.
