LANDMARK YEAR FOR WILLIE

- Staff Reporter

A Crieff man who enjoyed bagging Munros into his 80s is looking forward to celebrating another milestone when he turns 100 tomorrow.

Willie McAvoy, who lives at the Bield’s Strathearn Court development, is looking forward to spending the day with family and friends.

Looking ahead to his centenary celebration, he attributed his good health and longevity to staying active.

Born in 1916 in Clydebank, as a boy, Willie used to holiday at Loch Earn with his aunt and uncle where he picked up his love of Scotland’s glorious hills.

On the year of his retiral at the age of 80, Willie bagged the UK’s second biggest peak – Ben MacDui.

Willie’s daughter Peggy said:“He’s always been incredibly active, staying mobile, scaling some of the country’s biggest hills and of course, working up until his 80s.

“There’s no doubt he’s benefited from an active lifestyle and the great Scottish outdoors.”

Willie’s celebrations are due to extend over the next few days with an afternoon tea with neighbours.

Peggy added:“His wife was a wonderful cook and would always make a splendid Christmas dinner!”

Since moving to Strathearn Court 15 years ago, Mr McAvoy has become an integral part of the community.

A Bield spokesperson at Strathearn Court said:“Willie is popular with everyone who lives here.

“Turning 100 is such an incredible accomplishment and we’d all love to wish him a happy birthday and very merry Christmas.”
