Busy month as rotary club raises £3K for good causes

Lewie Reith picks up his prizes from George Lawrie The Rotary Club of Kinross and District has had a busy month culminatin­g in the collection of more than£3,000 for local charities through its annual Santa’s Sleigh tour throughout Kinross-shire.

Santa visited Kinross, Milnathort and outlying villages over seven nights delighting children with promises of gifts this Christmas while volunteers from local groups went door to door to raise cash for worthy causes.

Earlier in the month the club also held local heats of two UK-wide competitio­ns with the help of teachers at Kinross High School to select Kinross-shire’s best young chef and best young musician.

For the second year running Lewie Reith won the‘Young Chef’competitio­n, this time with a pork tapenade prosciutto and lemon meringue pie. Second and third places went to Freya Conway and Eilidh MacGilp respective­ly.

The judges were Ron Kitchin, managing director of The Kitchin, Trevor Wootton of Burnbank B&B and Rotarian Dugald McIntyre.

Prizes were presented by senior vice president of the club George Lawrie and included chefs whites, a signed copy of a Tom Kitchin cookery book and aprons from The Kitchin restaurant as well as cash prizes.

Later this month Ola Stanton won the ‘Young Musician’competitio­n with violin renditions of Burleigh’s Allegro and Bohm’s Sarabande. Second and third prizes went to Lilly Roy on violin and Cameron Macfarlane on saxophone respective­ly.

The competitio­n was ably judged by Craig Burns, director of music for‘The Highland Band’as well as local musicians Isobel Watt and Jenny MacLeod. Coupons were presented as prizes by club president Malcolm Wood.

Lastly a club panel chose to sponsor Kinross High School pupil Rosie Cormack to visit the European Parliament in February next year and take part in a debate with students from across the Eurozone .
