The long iron v the hybrid

-

Have you ever wondered why you struggle to hit your long irons?

Today I’m going to explain why this is and I’ll also give you a solution to the problem.

The best bit is that it’s not your fault and it’s very easy to fix! Did you know that a modern 3 iron is really a 1 iron in disguise?

In an effort to make the golf ball go further, club manufacturers over the past decade or so, have been sneakily strengthening the lofts on all your irons without telling you.

The result of this, is that your long irons now have such low lofts, that most players struggle to flight the ball. Thankfully, there is a solution to this problem and it lies in the guise of a hybrid club.

Hybrids have a wider sole, with a lower centre of gravity and greater head weight than long irons which helps to create more lift on the ball flight (pic 1).

Just be careful to understand that a number 4 hybrid with around 22 degrees of loft, will hit the same distance as a well struck 3 iron.

And I would suggest not going any lower than a 3 hybrid with around 19 degrees if you want to remain consistent.

To play the hybrid, position the ball a couple of inches inside your left heel and create a nice tall posture at address (pics 2 and 3).

This will allow your shoulders to turn freely and produce a nice wide swing arc. Make a nice smooth swing and watch your ball soar into the air!
