- Melanie Bonn

Perth Methodist Church on Scott Street A Fair City church begins 2017 on a hopeful note, having heard it is to receive £10,000 to upgrade its facilities.

Perth Methodist Church has been awarded a grant from the National Churches Trust to help create a community and cultural hub.

The money comes as a slice of a £596,000 rescue fund spread across the UK by the trust.

The city centre church dating from 1879 made a bid to refurbish the kitchen, increase the number of toilets, remove fixed seating and upgrade the heating.

Those who currently use the Scott Street place of worship – and a variety of potential new users and community-based groups – will benefit from the refurbishment programme, which includes levelling the floor and taking out the pews to make the space more flexible.

As well as worship, the vision is that Perth Methodist Church will be a venue for youth work, dancing, drama, concerts and public meetings.

Broadcaster and journalist Huw Edwards, vice-president of the National Churches Trust, said:“I’m delighted that this Christmas the future of Perth Methodist Church, which does so much to help the local community, is being safeguarded by a National Churches Trust grant to fund new facilities.

“This funding will help ensure that this important place of worship continues to serve local people for many years to come.

“Churches and chapels may be historic buildings, but they can be part of our future, too.”
