Some of the walkers took their canine companions along There was an energetic start to 2017 in Blairgowri­e as the town hosted its annual New Year’s Day fun run and walk.

The fun run has been going for more than 30 years, with the walk added nearly 15 years ago in a bid to boost participat­ion numbers.

This year’s turnout was on a par with previous editions – and included keen runners, families and others looking to put their best foot forward in style.

Runners gathered at Blairgowri­e Town Hall for the start of the 3.8mile course, which includes a circuit of the town before finishing in the Wellmeadow.

A prize-giving ceremony was later held in the town hall.

This year the men’s race was won by Mike Carroll from Perth Road Runners in a time of 19 minutes 55 seconds.

In the ladies’ race, winner and local girl Michelle MacKay, who runs with Dundee Road Runners, set a new Mike Carroll won the men’s race

All ages joined in with the annual event course record with her time of 22 minutes 56 seconds – beating her own record of last year by 33 seconds.

In the boys’ race, there was another local success story as Blairgowri­e’s Fraser Matthews finished in first place in a time of 21 minutes 42 seconds just five seconds outside the course record set in the 2015 event.

In the girls’ race it was Emily Gilmore from Blairgowri­e who came in first with a time of 30 minutes 14 seconds. The annual fun run and walk is popular with runners from a number of clubs
