Charges to return at Canal Street car park

Free-for-all ending at refurbished multi-storey

- Iain Howie

Free parking at Perth’s Canal Street multistorey site is about to end.

Motorists were given weeks of waived charges as around £1.7m was spent on refurbishing the 30-yearold facility.

The free-for-all will end on Tuesday when charges starting at £1 per hour are levied on vehicles, although free 15 minute parking still applies.

The council-run car park has used the charge-free period since the car park re-opened for the Christmas Light switch- on in November to incorporate feedback from car park users on the new layout.

Convener of the enterprise and infrastructure committee Councillor John Kellas said: “Canal Street car park has undergone a fantastic renovation, providing bright, airy and safe parking for all coming into Perth. I am delighted to see such a positive improvement to the city centre.”

The refurbishment has seen Canal Street fitted with wider spaces and wider approaches to the up and down ramps, and introduced pay on exit parking. It also boasts improved disabled parking and better lighting.

Both Canal Street and other council-operated car parks in and around the city will continue to offer free parking after 2pm on Thursday and Fridays until January 27.
