Amy has designs on race success

Kinross High pupil wins jersey contest

- Johnathon Menzies

A talented teenager proved she had designs on success by winning a competition run by organisers of one of the region’s most popular cycling events.

Kinross Cycling Club asked local schoolkids to create a design for a jersey to be worn by some cyclists taking part in Sportive Kinross – a multipleroute event which takes place on April 29.

And an entry inspired by the Tour de France created by Amy Broadhurst, a 16-yearold S5 pupil at Kinross High School, was recently revealed as the winner.

Amy was one of several Higher Graphic Communication students to suggest ideas after being asked to come up with a concept that was iconic, reflected the event and the area and would be suitable for both sexes.

Patrick Freeman’s entry secured the runner-up spot.

Amy, herself a keen cyclist, based her design on the King of the Mountains jersey from the Tour de France – but with purple spots rather than red complementing the existing club kit.

She will be riding the Sportive herself, alongside her proud father Jon, both sporting the winning jersey.

Design technology teacher Richard Smith said: “When Sportive Kinross originally approached the department to redesign the graphics for their 2017 event jersey, I knew it represented a fantastic opportunity for our Higher Graphic Communication students.

“All too rarely do our students have the opportunity to work alongside a real client, with their winning entry actually being produced.

“I was really pleased with how the students responded to the project – from the moment the students were given the original brief until the moment they submitted their proposals, they were enthusiastic and put a tremendous amount of effort into their submissions.

“I was also very impressed by the fact that they undertook the project over and above their other study commitments, devoting a lot of their time before and after school and even during lunchtimes.

“In the end, there could be only one winner and I know Amy is delighted. I also know the experience has genuinely deepened the learning of all the students involved, whether they have been successful or not and I would like to thank Sportive Kinross for giving us that opportunity.”

Sportive Kinross event organiser Jeff Wall explained: “Sportive Kinross is one of the most popular cycling events in Scotland now, with 850 places (l to r) Kinross High School teacher Richard Smith, Donnie Macleod of Synergy Cycles, Amy Broadhurst, Patrick Freeman, Craig Barron of Synergy Cycles and Stewart Wilson of Sportive Kinross selling out within 12 hours. On April 29, hundreds of cyclists will take on one of the three routes, with many wearing Amy’s jersey.

“We were blown away by the quality of the work the students produced and I’m sure the jersey will be a best-seller.

“The club would like to thank Amy and fellow students for their hard work, as well as our sponsors Synergy Cycles in Auchterarder, Heaven Scent café in Kinross and CHAS.”

Cycling jerseys can be preordered via the website www. sportive-kinross.co.uk.
