Photo project focuses on creating a special guide
City’s CATH and Six Circle groups join forces to take the snaps
A collaboration between Churches Action for the Homeless and Perth Six Circle Project hopes to offer new skills and provide useful information to Fair City service users.
A six-week photography project – building on the success of CATH’s 2017 calendar – is proving popular .
At its conclusion, group members will use their photos to highlight important services for those in need and have them printed on a speciallymade map.
Andrea Pullar, an adult literacy worker with CATH, said: “The project is a good continuation of the success of the calendar project.
“A lot of people expressed real interest in the photography side of things.
“We were inspired by the 2021 UK City of Culture bid and Louisa Garratt from Six Circle and I decided to work together.”
Photography students from Perth College UHI have taken a workshop as part of the initiative, and the CATH service users will also be shown how to edit their photos and write descriptions for the pictures.
The project also sees the involvement of Small City, Big Personality’s Nicki Martin, who will produce the map of the city.
The special guide, with pictures and information about local services, will feature the work of those taking part in the project.
Louisa added: “Having that visual aid, people are more likely to access the services.
“Take, for example, the foodbank. If it’s down an alleyway, if you’re new to Perth you might not know exactly where to go – but a visual aid can be a big help.
“People often end up with hundreds of leaflets about different services, and now they’ll only need one.”
The project is being funded by the local Adult Literacy and Numeracy Partnership.
Perth Six Circle Project, based near the city’s prison, aims to reduce social isolation, exclusion and disadvantage and improve the skills, knowledge and confidence of a wide range of people – these include those experiencing mental health problems, substance misuse and unemployment, as well as people with prison experience or that or an unpaid work order.
