During the evening he was presented with an envelope containing a cheque for him to use as he sees fit. Although a sad occasion it was a happy evening and we wish him well as he and the family move into a new stage of his ministerial life within the Military. The Sunday Service was conducted by Mr Michael Archibald. The readings were read by Margaret Martin. Michael’s childrens’ address was on the work of the Street Pastors and how they enact the teaching of Jesus to help one another On Sunday the service will be at the usual time of 11.30am.

Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary The 17-year-old cat that Sue had named Socks has gone to a perfect new home with two lovely elderly ladies. They have a history of taking on elderly cats – the last cat they had was Harry, who lived in luxury with them for the final year of his life. The Edinburgh cash and carry where Sue usually buys the wild bird food, cat and dogs biscuits, etc for the shops has closed down its pet food section and Sue now has to go to their Glasgow branch for supplies. This takes longer than going to Edinburgh and she is now looking into having the supplies delivered. It is hoped the cost of delivery won’t be much more than she spent on diesel and she hopes to keep the prices in the shops unchanged. Thanks go to Muchty Monkeys for their kind donation of toys, bric-a-brac and books. Anyone who can offer a home to a cat, help at fundraising events, in the shops or at the sanctuary, please call Sue on 01337 840414, or visit their website at www.catchat.org/adoption/fife.html or www.whinnybank.org.uk. Arthritis awareness Arthritis Awareness in Atholl were grateful to Fiona Findlay for coming to their meeting last week at short notice to tell them about trekking in the Guatemalan highlands. This was a popular subject, judging by the large attendance of members and friends. Guatemala is a land of active volcanos, earthquakes, mud slides and hurricanes, fertile soil and friendly people. The country’s main exports are chocolate and jade and tourism is a large part of the economy. Fiona illustrated her talk with pictures of volcanos, fields of vegetables of many varieties, coffee beans, the vibrantly coloured cotton cloth that the women weave, and flower and vegetable markets. The original culture was Mayan, which was destroyed by the Spanish in the 16th century, but the language survives in several dialects. The village people Fiona met were friendly and happy, despite the poverty and constant threat of landslides. Chairman Hugh Mackintosh called on Dr David Cruikshank to give the vote of thanks. AAA now look forward to their next meeting on March 6, when Dr Nicola Cowmeadow of Perth Museum will talk about family history. Everyone welcome. Passengers heading beyond Dundee could by hit by engineering problems over the next two Sundays

A ScotRail Alliance spokesperson said:“These are vital works and we appreciate our customers’patience. We would ask that they carefully check their journey plans, as the replacement buses will take longer than the trains, which could impact on onward connections.”

A9 Dualling meeting Meetings in the Mid Atholl Hall, Ballinluig take place on Wednesday, February 15, from 12pm to 7pm and Thursday, February 16, from 11am until 3pm. The meetings will consist of exhibitions and will allow comments. Transport Scotland and design consultants will be in attendance to discuss routes regarding the Ballinluig crossing. Football Vale of Atholl FC sponsored by R W Bell Building Services in their league match against Strathearn Grove (Crieff) 2-6 Vale. The team of Taylor, Henderson, Kennedy, Simpson, Young, Robinson, Crawford, Smillie, Millar, McLauchlan, Robertson, Webster, Mclauchlan, Berry, Barrie and Knowles played in terrible conditions. Vale got off to a great start when Steven Henderson smashed home a corner from 15 yards. Vale should have added to this, but the terrible surface and last ditch defending kept them out. The home side started to get into the game and drew level from a shot from 25 yards that flew past Taylor in Vale’s goal. Ten minutes later and Strathearn were ahead, Taylor had a shot covered when it deflected from a defenders head and hit the corner of the net. The scoreline was a bit of an injustice to Vale as they had been much the better side. Robertson then put Sean McLauchlan through and he netted 2-2. Just before the break, the home keeper made a good stop from Jamie Crawford’s shot, Matt Robertson was first to it to turn it into the net to restore Vale’s lead, resulting in a half-time score of 2-3. The pitch was even worse for the second half. The home side pushed more players forward, which caused the defence some headaches, but in turn left gaps in midfield that Vale took advantage of. Glenn Robinson got Vales fourth when his swerving shot from 30 yards hit the back of the net. Both sides made wholesale changes as the heavy pitch was having an effect. Berry, Barrie, Webster and Knowles replaced Henderson, Young, McLauchlan and Robertson. Strathearn found their way to Vale’s penalty box, but good defending kept them from getting many shots in on Taylor. Down at the other end of the pitch Vale were having no such problems as they fired shots and corners in. Millar then set up a fifth goal when he released Robinson, who got round the keeper to net in the 70th minute. The roles were reversed shortly after when Graeme Millar getting on the end of Robinson’s cross to head home for the sixth and final goal. One of Vale’s best attacking games of the season, scoring six and getting the three points away from home. Defence played well with a good shot and a deflection only getting past them. Midfielders Millar and Robinson carried on from last week and had excellent games. In the centre Smillie and Crawford ensured that the passing was better and more accurate giving McLauchlan and Robertson a plentiful supply which they put to good use. Subs did well again when they were brought on with no difference in the flow of play. Coaches Thain and Simpson will be pleased with the afternoon’s work, especially as the conditions were the worst experienced in a while. Player of the match was Glenn Robinson.
