Get to grips with putting...

-

When I grew up, there was only one way to hold a putter and that was with a traditional‘reverse overlap’grip (pic 2).

Anything other than this and you were thought to have had putting‘problems’.

Today, I’ll show you the most common alteration to the traditional grip, the‘Cack Handed’or left hand below right (right handed golfers).

Although having been around for a long time it has been made extremely popular in the last few years with the emergence of Jordan Spieth.

Jordan has always putted cack handed, this is not something he tried when struggling to hole putts. He believes it to be more effective and I agree.

When holding the putter with a traditional grip (pic 2), you will notice that the back of both wrists are bent.

This makes it fairly easy for the wrists to move during the stroke.

When holding cack handed (pic 3), you can see that the back of my left wrist is straighter and this makes it easier to control the arc of the stroke and more difficult for the wrists to move.

I have held the putter this way for many years and would not go back. I would suggest that you give it a try too.

One thing not to change with your putting however, is ball position.

Keep that forward in your stance (pic 1).
