Lawsonwill ensurethat Sconestay grounded

Scone Thistle manager Derek Lawson insists his group of players will not be getting carried away after impressive recent form.

The Jags have navigated themselves to second in the North Division and are currently on a six-game winning streak ahead of Saturday’s derby at Coupar Angus.

Boss Lawson says the hard work is set to continue at Farquharson Park as promotion to the East Premier League becomes a possibility.

“We’re fortunate to have a hard working squad of players, who not only work hard in training but also fight for each other on the pitch,” Lawson told the Perthshire Advertiser.

“We’ve a really good atmosphere in the dressing room and I hope that it’s as enjoyable for the lads to train hard as it is for me and the coaching staff to work with them.

“That hard work is now being seen in not only a good series of results but some excellent performances — not only in defeating teams in the top end of the league.

“It’s also in the physical, tough games you get against teams in the lower ends of the league.

“At this stage, we’re just taking each game as it comes. We’ve still got 11 matches to play this season and there are teams around us in the table with as many as 14 games to go.

“The most important thing is to keep winning and see where that takes us. The club itself has come on leaps and bounds since returning from a year in abeyance in 2012

“And while money is tight,

Derek Lawson as it is across Perthshire Junior football, I believe that we’re very professional in how we go about things both on and off the park.

“I’ll leave it for other people to judge if we have what it takes to survive in the Premier League, should that promotion happen, but I certainly wouldn’t have any fears.”

The immediate focus for Lawson is on this weekend’s trip to face Coupar, however. And it’s a game he knows will be a stern test.

He said: “It’s one of the quirks of the league fixtures that not a week after we play one of our East Perthshire rivals in Blairgowrie, the next week we play another.

“Derby games are usually a great contest and the ones between Coupar Angus and Scone have certainly been that over the past year. Our last visit saw us win 5-4 so it should be an exciting game.

“In terms of outcome, as it’s a contest between two of the form teams in the division, we’ll need to be at our best to claim all three points and consolidate our second place in the league.”
