An Open chance to delve into the benefits of local libraries

- Johnathon Menzies

The latest in a series of community open days at libraries across Perthshire and Kinross-shire take place this week.

The facilities in Blairgowrie and Loch Leven will open their respective doors from 10am on Thursday, while Coupar Angus Library opens from the same time the following day.

Culture Perth and Kinross, the new trust responsible for museum and library services across the area, is inviting residents to “jump into their local library and explore, enjoy and connect” at a series of related events.

They are aimed at highlighting why libraries aren’t just about books, and a similar event will be held at the AK Bell Library in Perth on Saturday, March 4.

Culture Perth and Kinross operates 13 library locations and four mobile libraries.

Adults can enjoy immediate access to library resources by joining on the day with proof of address.

Elaine Wallace, from the AK Bell Library, explained: “Members can access free wi-fi, computers and the internet. They can also tap into a huge selection of e-audio books, e-magazines, e-reference and online resources for children. There is a free library app which gives access to library information, and of course there are traditional newspapers, magazines and thousands of books.

“The libraries teams also coordinates book groups, author talks and signings, exhibitions and special events geared at children.

“Plus there are impressive local studies resources and a network of mobile libraries covering the rural parts of Perth and Kinross not served by a community library building.”

Helen Smout, chief executive of Culture Perth and Kinross, said: “The community open day events are an opportunity to celebrate the very best that libraries have to offer.

“During February and March, we want to ensure that as many people as possible are inspired to visit a library, discover what’s on offer and encourage their friends and family to get involved.

“If you haven’t been inside your local library for a few years, I would encourage you to pop in and find out more – I’ll guarantee you’ll be amazed at what’s on offer.”

The Blairgowrie open day concludes at 7pm, with the day at the Loch Leven facility wrapping up at 7.45pm and Friday’s Coupar Angus showcase coming to an end at 6pm.
