It’s a journey up the A9 which, although visually appealing, can be a monotonous one. But the return trip is all the sweeter if three points have been banked.

Even sweeter when the winner comes in the 90th minute – and even sweeter again when the winner is a powerful drive into the top corner.

There were a number of solid displays from the Saints camp on Saturday afternoon but Blair Alston was rightly deserving of his man of the match plaudits.

He has made a consistent start to his Perth career, a solid performer who rarely puts a foot wrong. The 24-year-old displayed his class and provided evidence as to how important a player he could become for the club.

And it was the former Falkirk star who almost opened the scoring in spectacula­r fashion when his audacious flick crashed back off the post.

In all honesty, it was a piece of rare quality in a first half which failed to have both sets of supporters on the edge of their seats. It was a scrappy encounter with a midfield battle the order of the day.
