Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary Sue has three new feral jobs to be sorted before too many female cats fall pregnant in Stirling, Dysart and Perth Council recycling area. She has asked the local Cat Protection League’s help with funding as many cats will need to be neutered and sadly, none of these cats can be returned. Whinnybank is the only cat rescue in Scotland which will keep this number of feral cats and are always desperate for funds towards the escalating costs involved. Sue can only cover the costs of neutering due to the kindness of her local vet, alongside donations from the sanctuary’s supporters. All of the white kittens mentioned last week have now been homed – and went in two pairs. Thanks to the increase in daylight hours the hens and ducks are now laying well. Thanks go to Dino’s for their donation of books, toys and bric-a-brac. If anyone can offer a home to a cat, help at fundraising events, in the shops or at the sanctuary, please call Sue on 01337 840414, or visit their website at www. catchat.org/adoption/fife.html and www.whinnybank.org.uk. Bonus ball There was no winner on last week’s TICC bonus ball, resulting in a double rollover this week. All welcome. Vale of Atholl Pipe Band The pipe band are holding their AGM in the Atholl Palace Hotel on Sunday, March 19, at 2pm, where all the usual annual reports will be given. Football Vale of Atholl FC sponsored by R W Bell Building Services. The team were: K Walker, A Clark, B Darabus, B Taylor, A Berry, B Scrimgeour, A Simpson, C Kennedy, G Millar, R Thorne and M Clark, with substitutes W Reeves and N Johanson. Breadalbane made the short trip to Pitlochry for the Birks cup semi final this week. Coach Simpson was busy the previous day trying to get a team together after many boys were unavailable for the game due to other commitments. On paper, it was a team full of battlers and players unwilling to go down without a fight. Skipper for the day Taylor made the choice to switch ends at kick-off, giving Breadalbane the wind and kicking down hill in the first half. The Vale struggled to get any rhythm at the start of the game with Breadalbane on the front foot for most of first half. Thorne had a good chance when put through, but their keeper made a smart save. Walker in goal was called in to action a few times with his handling top notch and was made to make a great save from a long range effort. Vale’s defence was dealing with everything and the midfield battled hard to get any sort of hold on the game. Breadalbane were awarded a penalty when their centre midfielder broke through, and Taylor went to cover and was harshly (perhaps not) judged to have fouled him. Breadalbane’s striker made no mistake from the spot. Half-time score was 0-1 and Vale had the wind behind them, kicking down hill in the second half which was a relief to the legs of the boys that hadn’t played for a while. They started the second half brightly and Thorne had a good chance from a corner with their keeper saving smartly. Vale got on top and Breadalbane were limited in their chances on goal. Thorne was put through on goal, but just as everybody thought he had scored, it rebounded off the post. Breadalbane did, however, have the ball in the net from a free kick, but the ref blew for what was an infringement in front of keeper Walker, which was a huge relief for the Vale. Wayne Reeves went on in place of a tiring Clark for his first outing for the Vale for many a years. Simpson had the ball in centre midfield and put a great ball through to Thorne, and this time he made no mistake and the Vale went level. Vale kept plugging away and with eight minutes to go, Kennedy put through a pinpoint pass to Thorne, sprinting through on goal with the keeper coming out to meet him. Thorne chipped into an empty net sending the Vale players and fans into euphoria. Vale dug deep to claim their spot in the final. This was a great performance from an under strength team. Vale battled well and never gave up. Walker in goal had a great game having some smart saves and his handling was brilliant. Full backs Berry and Clark were solid, Taylor and Darabus won everything in the air and stuck to their task brilliantly. Millar gave them all sorts of problems down the left, Simpson and Kennedy drove the team on and Scrimgeour never gave up on the right. Thorne and Clark put in a good shift up top with Thorne taking his two goals well. There were few candidates for man of the match but Craig Kennedy edged it. Tomorrow Vale are away to Letham CC in a league game with a 2pm start. Continued on page 28
