-

St John’s is appealing for support from locals St John’s Academy in Perth is looking for people’s help as it aims to enhance the environs of the school.

Staff and pupils hope to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

The scheme works with customers of Tesco selecting their chosen good cause to receive cash support from money for its carrier bags bought in store.

The supermarket giant is working with Groundwork on the community scheme, which sees grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.

Around Perth, Tesco customers have three groups to pick from and St John’s Academy is one of the groups on the shortlist.

Sean Hagney, St John’s Academy head teacher, said: “We have launched a fundraising initiative to help transform our primary playground into an exciting space that will encourage children to be more active. At the moment, our playground is largely a tarmac space.

“With funding, we will add in a variety of fixed play equipment - vertical log climber, swinging logs, net climber scramble wall, and lots of number games too.

“We recognise that while we have an outstanding building, our current primary playground is very limited and we want to improve the experience for every child.”

Voting is open in stores throughout March and April. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop there.
