Fairtrade status aids businesses

County mark achievement at centre event

- Iain Howie

A top accolade which recognises the efforts to promote fair pay and conditions for foreign workers has been conferred on Perth and Kinross.

The area has successfully achieved Fairtrade Zone status, following its ongoing commitment to promoting Fairtrade principles.

Perth and Kinross celebrated the achievement at an event at Bell’s Sports Centre on Saturday.

And to mark the occasion, Perth and Kinross Fairtrade Steering Group revealed its plans to promote Fairtrade to more community groups and businesses in the area by taking part in campaigns, and developing an online directory where Fairtrade goods can be bought.

Support for Fairtrade came from PKC, businesses, faith groups and the public, helping to achieve the five qualifying goals to earn the status.

Karena Jarvie, chair of the Perth and Kinross Fair Trade Steering Group, said: “The steering group would like to especially thank the 11 councillors who are our Fairtrade Champions, and our three Fairtrade Flagship Employers for Perth and Kinross – Culture Perth and Kinross, Live Active Leisure and Highland Spring Group.

“We appreciate their help in promoting Fairtrade Fortnight and encouraging the buying of Fairtrade products such as tea, coffee and sugar.

“Scotland has just renewed its status as a Fairtrade Nation and now we are the 25 Fairtrade Zone!”

Adam Gardner, communities campaigns manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “Thanks to the ongoing support of the public and campaigners, an increasing number of farmers in developing countries are now selling their products on Fairtrade terms, bringing them a stable income, and the chance to trade their way out of poverty.”

Fairtrade helps small-scale farmers ensure they earn stable incomes and have long-term contracts with companies.

It also means they earn the Fairtrade Premium, which they invest as the farmer-owned cooperative democratically chooses, in projects that will benefit their business or community.
