Provost Liz Grant, Deputy Provost Cllr Bob Band, Chinese Deputy Consul-General Limin Zhang, Cllr Dave Doogan, Pete Chan (PCCA chair), Andy Chan (PKAVS chair) and Paul Graham (PKAVS CEO) An exhibition which toured at Perth College UHI is a welcome boost to Perth’s bid for City of Culture 2021.
Roots Scotland is a nationwide exhibition celebrating ethnic minorities in Scotland, and has just finished a successful run at Perth College from March 7-15. The event showcased the experience of ethnic minority communities who live in Scotland and their contributions to Scottish life and culture.
Speaking at the exhibition’s launch, the chair of the programme board for Perth’s UK City of Culture bid, Cllr Ian Miller, said: “Perth’s City of Culture bid is rooted in our diverse communities. Our programme is based on what our communities have told us is important to them, including the key theme of‘belonging’.
“The bid will celebrate Perth’s place as a meeting point for different ideas, people and traditions, and the cultural contribution of our immigrant communities, old and new.
“As such, the Roots Scotland exhibition is an ideal fit for our bid and I’m delighted to welcome it.”
The event included workshops and events celebrating Perth’s Chinese community, including the Mooncake Festival and lantern-making workshops.
The exhibition, which was organised by PKAVS Minority Communities Hub, the West of Scotland Regional Equality Council and Perth’s Chinese Community Association, amongst others, was opened by Provost Liz Grant on Tuesday March 7 and attended by a number of visitors, including Chinese Deputy Consul-General Limin Zhang.
Mr Zhang said:“Well done. The Minority Community Hub has done a great job. I have not seen something like this anywhere else in Scotland.”
