Looking back on 175 great years

-

Top table guests at the Crieff and Ochtertyre anniversary dinner Crieff and Ochtertyre Curling Club celebrated its 175th anniversary with a special dinner.

A total of 70 members, former members and guests gathered at the Lovat Hotel in Perth for the event.

President John Kirk introduced the guest speaker, Robbie Scott of Dunkeld Curling Club.

Robbie is a pastpresident of curling’s national body, the Perth-based Royal Caledonian Curling Club, and possesses a vast knowledge of the sport.

He explained the club got its Royal title following a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to Scone Palace.

The Earl of Strathmore presented the Royal couple with a pair of curling stones and demonstrated the game on the palace’s ballroom floor.

Prince Albert then tried his hand at“delivering”a stone. After being amused by this, the Queen allowed ‘Royal’to be put in the club’s name.

On display at the event were the club’s trophies and medals, some which date back to the 1840s.

There were also snippets from the club’s minutes going back many years.

These included: Crieff Drummond Club and Ochtertyre Club agreeing to amalgamate in 1945; Ochtertyre Loch being fully playable from February 18 until March 27 in 1947, and ladies being given membership in 1953.
