Responding to inventive economics
Dear Editor
In reply to the letter ‘Debt risk of yes vote’, the letter starts by telling us that Nicola Sturgeon has no concept of economics, then continues with a string of ill thought-out comments which shows a grasp of economics and current affairs that even the hands of a clock could better.
The next sentence states that if we were independent we’d get no money from Westminster. Of course not, neither would we be giving money to Westminster. Why should they, why should we...? Is the implication that Scotland lives on hand-outs, a charity case, a beggar at London’s mercy? If this was true, is the writer happy to be a parasite living off working English people whose social services, NHS, schools and infrastructure are falling apart?
‘We would not be able to trade with the EU because we are not members’. We can’t argue with that! None of us have non-EU Chinese Christmas decorations, Japanese TVs, Brazilian corned beef or Bangladeshi T-shirts, have we? These Egyptian potatoes, Peruvian asparagus and South African oranges must be falsely labelled. Along with bananas they are secretly cultivated in the Somerset Levels.
Let me tell you here and now that if anybody gets between me and my Kendal Mint Cake supply, their life is at risk!
Perhaps Mr/Ms Anonymous could explain why he didn’t make the same claim that ‘The UK would be unable to trade with the EU because it is not a member’.
He/she may also care to tell us what Norway’s secret is, since it trades with the EU. Thomas R Burgess by email
