The championsh­ips are off and running

Perth athletes go to Newtonmore for season’s first

Perth runners hit the road this week for the first championsh­ip race of the season.

Newtonmore was the destinatio­n for an event which welcomed an impressive 48 club members in a field of 129.

The 10-mile race, through Kingussie and back, was competed for in damp but calm conditions.

Michael McConnell was first road runner home and second overall in a time of 55:56 and Stuart Robertson was second green vest and fifth overall in 58:36.

They were followed by Kevin Riddell, third club member and seventh overall with a new personal best time of 1:01:42.

Kevin Rogers and Ronnie Glen also achieved top 10 finishes with eighth and 10th place respective­ly in 1:02:20 and 1:02:44, which was also a new personal best time for Ronnie.

For the females, Caroline Mary Jones was fourth overall in a time of 1:08:43. Lisa Aikman was second female road runner in 1:11:04 and Sonjia Crow third in 1:11:58.

Ronnie Glen (MV40), Neil Muir (MV50), Robin Livingston­e (MV60), Gillian McGuire (MV40) and Fiona Angus (MV50) were all second in their age categories and Margaret McIntosh third in hers (MV60).

Both the male and female team prizes were picked up by Perth Road Runners.

Back in the Fair City, Michael Soutar was first club member home at Perth Parkrun, finishing in sixth place with a time of 18:12.

Lorraine Macpherson was first female road runner finishing in 21:57, closely followed by Scott Connor with a new personal best time of 22:00.

Further afield, Mike Dales was doing a spot of parkrun tourism at Dalby Forest where he finished in 23:24.

Elsewhere, Caroline Ness and Kevin Rogers, who had both competed at Newtonmore the previous day, travelled to Loch Katrine for the marathon, involving a challengin­g 26.2 mile route along the shores of the loch.

Kevin finished in seventh place in 3:12:54 and Caroline in 5:54:34.

Several road runners also travelled to Alloa for a halfmarath­on. In a field of over 2500, Alistair Gudgin was first green vest home in 68th position in a time of 1:21:00.

For Stephane Reid, Natalie King and Sara Baillie it was their first race at this distance. Natalie finished in 1:58:41 and Sara in 2:03:13, while Stephane was paced round by Stewart Reid and finished in 2:19:59.

Down south, Harriet Shaw travelled to London and ran the Salomon Richmond half

A great turnout of Perth runners in Newtonmore was the highlight of a busy week

marathon where she finished in a time of 2:10:08.

Finishing off the action were six road runners in Errol for the 6K fun run. Duncan Ryan finished third overall in 21:55, with Claire Douglas finishing first female and seventh overall in 26:12.

Sonjia Crow was third female in 26:44. Cheryl Gahan, Sandra Taylor and Bob Brown completed the club line-up.
