Making the first move

With the club face having the majority of control over the initial direction the golf ball will fly, it has become increasing­ly more important to keep the club face passive throughout the swing.

When you watched the world’s top players of yesteryear there were lots of loose‘armsy’type swings, which relied on timing to control the ball flight.

The modern golf swing is much more efficient and we are able to achieve more consistent results with a simpler movement.

A fundamenta­l to this more consistent swing is a move away from the ball that is simple yet effective.

As you move away from the ball (pic 1), you should have the feeling of your shoulders, arms and club all moving as one unit. We are also looking for very little hand and wrist action during this first stage of the swing.
