- Melanie Bonn

Lucy Birkett (12) and gran Irene Cattanach Marmalade makers of the world could not lick Aberfeldy’s champion creators of the perfect preserve.

Gran and granddaughter team, Irene Cattanach and Lucy Birkett (12), had a heap of accolades in the jar at the 2017 World’s Original Marmalade Awards.

The orange-preservers travelled together to Dalemain, near Penrith in Cumbria, to see how their handiwork was greeted at the annual world marmalade festival held on March 18.

Judges dug deep into the jars to check for colour, flavour and consistency.

Young Lucy beat her nan by landing a silver award for her tasty ‘Twist’ marmalade, as well as two bronzes.

She also came second in the children’s label competition.

The more seasoned Irene proudly took home six bronze awards and one merit.

Her star turn was winning the prize for the best decorated label.

Chuffed to have won praise for her homemade golden shred, Irene explained the family team also helped a good cause.

She told the PA: “We raised over £200 for the Carlisle and North Lakeland Hospice at Home and Marie Curie.

“That’s on top of the £200 we raised when we entered last year.

“Lucy and I felt wonderful to see we’d won prizes, especially when you consider we were competing against 2000 other marmalades.”
