Coastal inspiration for artist’s display

Donald creates work at harbour

- Rachel Clark

A Bankfoot artist will have his work put on permanent display this weekend at Dunbar Harbour.

Donald Urquhart’s art installation, called ICE CUBES, is part of a complete redevelopment of the 18th century East Lothian harbour.

The piece includes a series of engraved mirrored cubes along the harbour, each with engravings of the different species of plankton found off the coast of Dunbar.

The former Perth Academy pupil will also have a collection of drawings on display at a public exhibition at Dunbar Townhouse Museum to coincide with the new installation being unveiled from Sunday, April 2, until Tuesday, May 2.

Donald said: “In developing the ideas for SEA CUBES, I spent a lot of time on the coast around Dunbar, and studied the intertidal area. The drawings were developed from that and are a parallel body of work to the public artwork at the harbour.

“My practice normally engages with the Perthshire landscape so it was interesting to develop a body of work from a landscape that was unfamiliar to me.”

Donald now works as the director of the University of Edinburgh’s art, space and nature programme, and has also invited one of his senior students to exhibit alongside him at the museum.

Donald’s artwork project is funded by Historic Scotland and the Viridor Legacy Fund, and comes off the back of recent international exhibits in Ireland and Japan.
