Free theatre workshop for women

Women from across Perth and Kinross are being invited to take part in a free theatre workshop on Saturday, April 22 at Perth Concert Hall.

Those who attend the workshop will create a piece of street performance called Silence and Song, which will then be performed outside on the opening night of the National Theatre of Scotland’s new play, 306:Day at Perth’s Station Hotel on Saturday, May 6.

Silence and Song is being run by both Perth Theatre and the National Theatre of Scotland, and promises to offer women the chance to explore theatre, song and costume, as well as the opportunity to perform the work they create.

Horsecross Arts has described the Silence and Song workshop as “a thought-provoking, inspiring and creative experience which will open up the central themes of the play and allow participants the opportunity to discover more about the way the National Theatre of Scotland works”.

The workshop, and the eventual street performance, is inspired by the story 306:Day tells.

This play is the second in a trilogy of National Theatre performances entitled ‘306’, to commemorate the 306 British soldiers who were executed for desertion and cowardice in the First World War, and is part of a larger UK-wide arts programme to mark the war’s centenary anniversary.

This particular chapter of the 306 trilogy will follow the lives of ordinary women in Glasgow fighting to be heard as they protested against the war and the 306 executions.

306:Day will run from Friday, May 5 until Tuesday, May 13, before setting off on a Scottish tour.

Silence and Song’s all-female theatre workshop takes place from 10am until 4pm on Saturday, April 22 in Perth Concert Hall’s Tilt Room, and is open to all women over 16.

Those wishing to take part must be available for both the workshop and the 306:Day’s opening night street performance of Silence and Song.
