Eve determined to keep hold of trophy Muirhead is back in Perth

- Matthew Gallagher

Team Muirhead is bidding to retain their EDF Energy City of Perth Ladies International curling title this weekend.

The Scottish quartet, led by Blair Atholl’s Eve Muirhead, returned to the Dewars Centre ice yesterday for this first time since securing World Championship bronze in Beijing.

Nine of the world’s top 25 are in the Fair City and will be ready to throw a spanner in the works of the local rink’s trophy defence.

Muirhead, who has also been heavily involved in staging the event on her home ice rink, is looking forward to the challenge.

“I am really looking forward to now competing in what will be a great tournament,” she said.

“With five Canadian teams, plus four Swiss teams as well as rinks from the USA, Japan and Sweden it will be a tough, tough field.

“This is a great follow on from the World Championships and it was great to win the event last year with Mhairi Milne who kindly stepped in while Anna Sloan was injured.

“We are keen to hold on to the title at a curling rink which is so important to our training and competition schedule.”

As one of Scotland’s leading energy providers with sustainability at the core of its business, the title sponsors EDF Energy have provided a welcome boost to the sport.

EDF Energy’s Scottish business director, Paul Winkle, said: “EDF Energy is delighted to be supporting the EDF Energy City of Perth Ladies International for a second year.

“Last year’s event was hugely successful and it is great to see that the competition has grown with even more international teams bidding for the title.

“Curlers use geometry and physics every time they take to the ice, as well as sports science to keep them fit for competition.”

Defending skip Muirhead is on board as EDF’s brand ambassador.

She was keen to outline the importance of their title sponsorship, adding: “EDF Energy’s support has helped to enhance the profile of this event.

“And it enables us to showcase to the

Eve is back on home soil to win the City of Perth Ladies International world what a great facility and great ice we can offer here in Scotland.”

Action at Dewars started yesterday and runs through until Sunday. Spectators are welcome.
