Relegated Shire show real spirit

Eagles down after Dumfries defeat

-

Perthshire ........... 22 Dumfries Saints .. 69 of the opposition, bone jarring. Perth were even winning scrums against the head but, despite their best efforts, they couldn’t get the ball over the line.

And it was Dumfries who would open the scoring courtesy of a counter attack out wide. They then exploited the space 15 minutes later and Shire found themselves 14 points down after 35 minutes.

A superb try by Williamson, with help from Bowater and Coull, converted by Armitt, brought the Eagles within range.

But again Dumfries winger Kenny Henderson would create widespread panic, similarly to the previous encounter between these teams.

He grabbed the first of his hat-trick of tries to stretch the lead.

Shire’s lack of defensive strength was exploited a few minutes later as Dumfries again touched down out wide.

They led 7–28 at half time and matters looked very ominous for Shire, who had no answer to the 15man brand of rugby which created scoring opportunities all over the park with limited possession.

There was no respite as Dumfries upped the pressure, converting a penalty and with Henderson running riot on the wing, another four tries came in quick succession.

Facing their biggest defeat of the season, Shire at last halted the one way traffic when Adam Dearden – playing only his second game – sent a clever chip through the defence and won the race for the touchdown.

Dumfries hit straight back, though, and Perth players were chasing shadows as the ball was spun out at speed for try number nine.

Strong play by Shire’s backs saw Dearden again score another

excellent try but the visitors were relentless. They went over for a score after a neat team move.

Rory McKay’s men were beaten but they showed a level of pride and commitment by going all out for a bonus point in the final minutes. They were rewarded when Gary Holborn crashed over for try number four.

Shire’s next home game is April 8 against RHC.
